- The party reaches the town gate to find it under attack. They defeat this initial airborne assault of wyvrens and manticores and a troglodyte who scattered strange seeds into the wind.
- After barely enough time to catch their breath, a second wave of attackers approaches. The heroes decide to let the civilians fend for themselves while they take advanced positions near the gate itself.
- A swarm of grimlocks attack the gate, while nothic gazers scale the walls and wreak havoc among the civilians. A pair of Ice Trolls attack weak points in the wall, and a huge Ogre batters down the gate.
- After a difficult running battle, the party defeat all the attackers – except they can not seem to bring the Ogre down. It manages to delay them long enough for the final wave of the attack to begin.
- Suddenly, thick vines burst from the ground and form humanoid shapes made of thorny twigs. At the same time, a massive shoot bursts from another spot, growing rapidly to form a cluster of roots wrapped around a spiny seed pod.
- Wave after wave of Blightborn Thorn Blights and Demon Thorns sprout from the ground and attack.
- After the third wave, the dragonborn Bax arrives, leading a contingent of the town guard. They provide some much-needed assistance to the beleaguered party.
- At last, the Ogre falls, turning the tide of the battle. The heroes make short work of the remaining enemies.
- With the main group of their army defeated at the gate, Skalmad’s army routes, breaking off into disorganized groups and fleeing into the Trollhaunt.

- The party leaves the Great Warren and heads back to Moonstair, hoping to assist in the town’s defense.
- They travel quickly through the swamps, and arrive at the town two days later.
- A pall of black smoke in the distance leads them to a farmstead under attack by a troll and a pack of worgs.
- From the rescued family, the PCs learn that the attack started an hour ago. Skalmad’s raiding groups are moving in from the east, traveling through hidden troll tunnels, down forest paths, and by air. However, most of the troll king’s forces appear to be hanging back waiting for a chance to freely enter the town.
- The party is told by a wounded member of the town watch that the south landing is under attack and the town watch can’t hold Skalmad’s forces off for much longer.
- The group heads to the south landing, and defeats a group of kuo-toa, chuuls, and a mass of magical tentacles rising from the sea.
- The party notices the sounds of a large battle coming from the Old Troll Wall’s main gate. From above the gate, four monsters swoop down upon the town. Three resemble dragons with vicious tail stingers. The fourth is a large lionlike creature with leathery wings. A strange-looking troglodyte rides on the creature’s back, wearing a necklace of flesh-covered bones around its neck.
- After a short rest, the heroes head to the gate.
- The party negotiated a kind-of / sort-of / maybe agreement with the dragon GloomFang.
- They then moved on, defeating some Trolls and freeing the Moonstair residents Arin, Berim, Callir, Edvina and Gerad. The PCs led them back to the entrance of the Warren, where the civilians said they could make their own way back to town.
- The group then moved on to a foundry-type room, where they engaged and defeated Skalmad and his minions.
- As he falls, Skalmad says, “You have beaten me for now. But already, my warriors advance on your town, humans. Moonstair will fall, and I will feast on the children of Therund before the full moon rises!” With that, Skalmad breathes his last. The orange stone in his eye socket glows brightly, spreading out to bathe his whole body in blinding light. An instant later, the troll king’s body is consumed by the blazing light. The orb then vanishes in a flash of crimson.
